Donald Trump repeats national anthem warning to NFL players

Donald Trump repeats national anthem warning to NFL players

On the Miami Dolphins' sideline, three players were on one knee during the singing of "The Star-Spangled Banner".

Relatively few players had demonstrated before president Trump's remarks, but last Sunday, more than 100 NFL players sat, knelt or raised their fists in defiance during the national anthem.

Starting with the first game on NFL Sunday during the third week of the season, several teams and, in some cases, the owners, participated in their own #TakeAKnee protests as a show of solidarity.

"Very important that NFL players STAND tomorrow, and always, for the playing of our National Anthem", he wrote.

He tweeted Saturday that players should stand on Sunday, saying they should respect the US flag and country.

Ryan also acknowledged that the original point of the player demonstration - racial injustice and police mistreatment of African-Americans - has become obscured by the narrower issue of how to act during the anthem.

Almost half of the 49ers' roster were kneeling during the national anthem, while the rest of the team stood behind.

The protests seen across the game this season stem from former National Football League quarterback Colin Kaeperknick's stand against racial and social inequality last season, with the then-San Francisco 49ers star the first to kneel down in protest following a string of police incidents involving black citizens. And on Thursday, Trump continued the crusade, drawing a rebuke from the NFL after he said football team owners feared their players. "I think you risk upsetting more people than it's worth". I wonder how many of them know what the issue is. Trump, in effect, pulled the trigger on his criticisms as though the players were kneeling on top of a disabled veteran. Responding to Trump, hundreds more players have been sitting, kneeling, locking arms or remaining in locker rooms. The announcer thanked the audience for the moment of prayer and the players stood for the anthem.

"The owners are clearly united in a sense that the attacks on the game, on the NFL, on the players were unfair and unfounded, and that there was unity among the group", Lockhart said, noting that about two-thirds of the 32 team owners were at league headquarters this week for committee meetings. "I think everyone has the right to protest, but I think you have to choose your stage wisely", said Laura Williams, who works in healthcare.
