First left-arm spinner to 400 Test wickets

First left-arm spinner to 400 Test wickets

The seemingly easy target, however, soon loomed large as Sami Aslam (2), Azhar Ali (0), Shan Masood (7), Babar Azam (3), Asad Shafiq (20), Sarfraz Ahmad (19), Hasan Ali (8), Mohammad Amir (9), Mohammad Abbas (0) were sent back to the pavilion by Sri Lanka's brilliant bowling.

Herath's dismissal of last batsman Mohammad Abbas was his 400th wicket in his 84th Test, becoming the 14th most successful bowler and fifth spinner in the five-day format to reach the milestone.

Leg-spinner Yasir Shah grabbed the key wicket of Dinesh Chandimal to leave visitors fighting to avoid defeat on Sunday.

The veteran left-arm spinner took 6-43 - 11-136 in the match-to scupper Pakistan, set a modest 136-run target, for just 114 on a tired fifth day Sheikh Zayed Stadium pitch.

Pakistan were 67 for 5 at Tea and with skipper Sarfraz Ahmad and Haris Sohail still at the crease, there was some hope still in the Test for the hosts.

Starting the final day at 69 for four, Sri Lanka stuttered with run-scoring.

Herath has been a scourge for Pakistan in the recent past (100 wickets against Pakistan so far) and hence it was not surprising when he was man responsible for ending Pakistan's unbeaten run in Abu Dhabi.

Pakistan, playing a Test match for the first time since Misbah-ul-Haq and Younis Khan retired, had their opponents struggling at 61 for three at lunch. We have played him a lot. But, upon closer inspection, it was revealed that Dilruwan had overstepped and Yasir was given another opportunity to lead Pakistan to victory.

Herath was the most successful bowler for Sri Lanka as he finished the day with 2-47. By end of the 18th over Pakistan had lost half their side for 35 runs.

Sri Lanka scored 419 runs in the 1st innings, to which Pakistan replied with 422 runs, leading into the 2nd innings on Day 4 by 3 runs.

The second Test - a day-night match - starts in Dubai from Friday. All credit should go to the people behind me, from my parents to the team and the supporting staff.

"They played some really good cricket and I'm sure this can continue throughout the series".

Asked how long he would like Herath to play in his side, given he is nearing 40, Chandimal made a little wish. Dickwella was unbelievable in the second innings, he got us to the 140 mark. There was some assistance from the surface. The technology returned a verdict of "umpire's call", which no longer sees the unsuccessful team lose one of their two reviews per innings.
