Microsoft to close Groove Music Pass and move users to Spotify

Microsoft to close Groove Music Pass and move users to Spotify

Microsoft is the latest company to exit the streaming music business: The software giant announce Monday that it was shuttering its Groove Music service at the end of this year.

Microsoft says that it will continue to invest in the Groove Music app though, but it will only be for playing back owned music (including music uploaded to OneDrive), which you also won't be able to purchase anymore. Later this week, Groove Music Pass users will have the option to import their custom playlists to Spotify. To find out if you're eligible for the 60-day free trial of Spotify Premium - and to answer any other questions you may have - you can check the Groove Music Pass FAQ.

Effective immediately, Microsoft will cease the sale of Groove Music passes. If you can't beat the music streaming service juggernaut, join it.

Groove Music was originally known as Xbox Music before the name change in July 2015.

Microsoft is to close its last remaining music streaming and download service, Groove Music.

Instead, Microsoft will attempt to foist Spotify on Windows 10 users instead. But Spotify is still much better than Groove Music in many different ways, so have a look around the app and you'll find some really nice features. And if you paid for Music Pass beyond December, you'll get a refund for the amount of time you didn't get to play.

If you bought a Groove Music Pass a la carte, but have not redeemed it, you will not be able to redeem it.

Microsoft has thrown in the towel and given up on making its own Groove streaming music and music store a competitor to Apple Music and Amazon Prime.

Microsoft is dropping out of the music streaming game.

Microsoft has announced plans to kill its Groove Music service.

It will not, however, be migrating playlists, so you'll probably be wanting to think about how you're going to recreate those. Consumers will no longer be able to purchase or download music from the Windows Store next year, but will still be able to access local music files or those stored in the cloud.
