3 troops wounded in militant attack on camp in Indian-controlled Kashmir

Following the attack, the movement towards airport was suspended and all morning flights were canceled after the militant attack took place at the BSF camp.

According to BSF and CRPF, which thwarted the fidayeen squad inside the BSF camp with J&K Police, the three terrorists entered the camp around 4.10 am from a gate adjacent to Gogo village.

Srinagar airport is the only civilian airport in the region, besides this, the technical airport used by armed forces and VIPs is also in the vicinity.

The old airfield, being manned by the Indian Air Force, is also located in the area. The remaining terrorists are holed up inside the building campus of the 182nd Battalion camp, BSF officials said.

Besides the AK 47 rifles and pistols, some grenades were also recovered from the possession of the militants, said officials. Pakistan based Jaish-e-Mohammed outfit claimed the responsibility for the attack, which comes a little over a month after an identical incident on police lines in south Kashmir's Pulwama district on August 26 in which eight security personnel were killed.

The attack began in the early hours of Tuesday when three fighters raided the highly-guarded Border Security Force (BSF) camp outside a regional airport in Humhama, some 17km from the area's main city of Srinagar.

Considering the vastness of the BSF camp in Srinagar, senior officers chose to launch an operation that included men from the BSF, the CRPF and the J&K Police. In the attack, BSF shot down one of the terrorist.

A police officer said two suspected rebels and a paramilitary officer had been killed in the fighting so far.

He condemned the terror attack on the BSF camp and sought an enquiry on how militants could enter a high security zone. The 182 Battalion is entrusted with the security of the runway of the Srinagar airport. There were several guests inside the paramilitary base at the time and security services evacuated them before moving in on the militants.

Sharma said that it was a serious attack "which was averted by our boys".

"We have resumed operations, passengers now allowed to proceed to the airport", the director of Srinagar Airport, Sharad Kumar, told media.
