Cardinal Pell heckled by protesters outside Melbourne courtroom

Cardinal George Pell was heckled by protesters after appearing at a Melbourne court over multiple historic sexual abuse charges.

Police helped Cardinal Pell through a 100-strong crush of national and worldwide media as he walked the 100 metres between his barrister's office and the court's main entrance for the brief filing hearing.

Cardinal Pell was charged in June with historical sexual offences involving multiple complainants.

There may be as many as 50 witnesses to give evidence at the hearing to determine whether Cardinal George Pell will stand trial.

The number of cases implicating the cardinal has yet to be announced, but it is believed that the alleged crimes occurred when he served as a priest in the city of Ballarat (1976-80) and as archbishop of Melbourne (1996-2001).

Cardinal Pell, who has stood down from his role in Rome to face court in his home country, has repeatedly and vehemently denied the allegations.

Magistrate Belinda Wallington refused Mr Richter's application to cross-examine five witnesses, but approved all others.

The court heard at least 55 witnesses had made statements to police.

Dozens of witnesses, including former choirboys, will be called during a preliminary hearing that prosecutors estimate will last four weeks.

After the hearing, protesters yelled at Cardinal Pell as he walked from the court with his legal team.

He has not been required to enter a plea yet but during his first appearance at the same court during the summer he asked his lawyer to explain he meant to plead not guilty. He did not react as he made his way down the steps.

Now can we talk about gun control legislation?
What might have raised a red flag? The debate begins again, but I have little confidence that anything substantive will change. The reality is that after so many mass shootings, any argument made against the regulation of gun purchases is invalid.
