Elon Musk Says Tesla Can Fix Puerto Rico's Electric Grid

Elon Musk Says Tesla Can Fix Puerto Rico's Electric Grid

The electric vehicle maker's CEO tweeted that his company has already helped to bring more efficient power sources to smaller islands and could use this expertise to assist Puerto Rico in its moment of crisis.

With solar power now becoming the fastest-growing source of new energy, accounting for two-thirds of new power being fed into global power grids, the technology is being hailed as a "new era". By way of solar power and batteries.

Tesla has had recent successes with the island of Kauai, in the Hawaiian archipelago where, through the implementation of the large Tesla batteries the island has gone from 6% to 46% in under ten years through strategically placed batteries and solar panels.

Following Musk's comments, Puerto Rican Governor Ricardo Rossello replied, "Let's talk". Along with transforming the electric auto industry, revolutionising transportation by inventing the Hyperloop and making every effort to take humans to Mars with SpaceX, he now wants to solve the energy crisis in Puerto Rico.

Tesla has already shipped hundreds of its Powerwall battery systems to Puerto Rico and Tesla employees are now busy installing them and training locals how to continue the process. "PR could be that flagship project", Rossello wrote. Tesla's biggest grid battery, now in production in South Australia, will have a total capacity of 129 megawatt-hours. Ta'u's population is only a few hundred, and the entire project cost about $8 million. But however you slice it would have to be much, much larger than the Australian system Tesla is now working on. Tesla claims on its website that Powerwall can provide "7+ days of continuous energy" during an outage.

They didn't take long to respond. Musk responded that Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) had already done so for other small islands around the world.

The Tesla CEO responded to a tweet asking if he could do in and rebuild the US territory's electricity system with one of his own. "To say you could be a full level 5 with just cameras and radar I don't think is possible".
