California Becomes 'Sanctuary State' with Gov. Brown Signature

California Becomes 'Sanctuary State' with Gov. Brown Signature

California is now officially a "sanctuary state" after Governor Brown signed controversial State Senate Bill 54 which limits local law enforcement cooperation with federal immigration authorities.

"This bill would, among other things and subject to exceptions, prohibit state and local law enforcement agencies, including school police and security departments, from using money or personnel to investigate, interrogate, detain, detect, or arrest persons for immigration enforcement purposes", the legislation said.

"The bill risks the safety of good law enforcement officers and the safety of the neighborhoods that need their protection the most", Attorney General Jeff Sessions said last month in Portland, Ore., urging Brown to reject the bill, according to The Los Angeles Times.

Some law enforcement officials say the impact of the sanctuary measure likely will be minimal because it bans immigration enforcement activities that few agencies participate in. A compromise expanded the list of crimes that, if an immigrant is convicted of one, allow police to interact with federal authorities.

As soon as President Trump announced he would be phasing out the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, which grants work permits to young people brought into the country illegally as children (many of whom refer to themselves as "Dreamers"), lawmakers issued a number of bills, including Assembly Bill 21, by Assemblyman Ash Kalra, D-San Jose.

The measure came in response to widespread fear in immigrant communities following Trump's election.

President Donald Trump has threatened to withhold federal funds from government entities that adopt so-called sanctuary policies. The other bills dealt with workplace, housing, school and civil protections for immigrants. The bill, which goes into effect in January, would allow police and sheriff's agencies to continue targeting risky criminals, while protecting hardworking families without legal residency in the country, Brown said in a signing statement.

"This protects public safety and ensures that hard working people who contribute to the state are respected".

A sweeping effort created to give Californians more information about the biggest donors to ballot measure campaigns was signed by Gov.

The legislation is meant to restrict local law enforcement from aiding federal immigration officials.

Asked for comment, White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders said she hopes California "will push back on their governor's, I think, irresponsible decision moving forward".

The bill's main sponsor, Senate President Kevin de Leon, praised the timing of the bill, stating it was needed in the climate of what he described as Trump's "mass deportation strategy", The Hill reported.

And to those Sheriffs who aligned with anti-immigrant forces during this campaign, we remind you: immigrants are a vital and inseparable part of California's heart and soul.
