Halep to become world number one after reaching China Open final

Halep to become world number one after reaching China Open final

An icy Halep served out the match at the end of a solid game on her own terms, converting the first match point she had.

Monday, October 9, Halep will be the 25th first racket of the world in the history of the WTA tour and the first from Romania.

Halep might have had a sense of deja vu when she found herself a set and a break up as that was the position of the French Open final when Ostapenko started a brilliant comeback and she threatened it again, as the Latvian rallied to lead the second set 4-3.

Simona Halep gained some revenge for her defeat by Jelena Ostapenko in the French Open final and achieved world number one status for the first time after a 6-2 6-4 win in the semi-finals of the China Open in Beijing on Saturday.

Simona Halep claimed her first win in eight meetings with Maria Sharapova at the China Open to avenge her US Open loss.

Despite hitting more winners than her rival, Sharapova committed 39 unforced errors and struggled to contend with the Halep's power and aggression in Beijing. "It's my first victory against her and I just want to enjoy the moment".

In the other semifinals, Caroline Garcia, who upset No. 3 Elina Svitolina, meets Petra Kvitova after the Czech eliminated countrywoman Barbora Strycova.

The Romanian has navigated through the summer in the vicinity of the world No. 1, each time failing to add an extra win to reach the summit.

The mercurial Latvian bested Sorana Cirstea 6-4 6-4 in an error-strewn quarter-final that saw both players struggling to hold serve.

The world No. 2 eased past Russia's unseeded Daria Kasatkina 6-2, 6-1 in 69 minutes and will face Latvia's Jelena Ostapenko next. Halep will be making her fourth straight appearance in the Republic.

Halep advanced to set up a rematch against Russian Darya Kasatkina, who defeated her last week at the Wuhan Open.
