Nine taken to hospital as crash sparks terror fears outside London museum

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: 'Whilst inquiries continue it is believed a auto mounted the pavement and collided with a number of pedestrians.

The Met Police have also clarified that they have detained the man at the scene, rather than arrested.

A Metropolitan Police spokesperson said: "We are aware of an incident in Exhibition Road, South Kensington".

'The man detained by officers is now under arrest and is in custody at a north London police station.

The crash occurred on Exhibition Road in the South Kensington neighborhood, and photographs on social media showed officers pinning a man to the ground and blood on the pavement.

Prime Minister Theresa May was being updated, a spokesman said, adding it was usual practice in such circumstances, and London Mayor Sadiq Khan said he was in close contact with the police's most senior counterterrorism officer.

"The police came in and told us to evacuate There was panic".

"The man detained by officers is now under arrest and is in custody at a north London police station".

The incident has been confirmed by the police as a road accident which is not "terror-related".

THE Natural History Museum is one of London's busiest and most famous tourist attractions.

He said: "Panic rippled across the crowd".

British media reported a auto had mounted the pavement outside the tourist attraction.

The police said the extent of the injuries suffered by the pedestrians is unclear.

Police said they were keeping an open mind about the incident after saying earlier they were not treating it as an act of terrorism.

London's official terrorist threat level has been set at "severe", indicating an attack is highly likely. In March, an assassin on Westminster Bridge in London was purposefully snapped into pedestrians, before he stabbed a policeman on site of Parliament.
