Syria regime forces enter IS-held Mayadeen: monitor

Syria regime forces enter IS-held Mayadeen: monitor

The Russian defence ministry has confirmed that the country's air force targeted an ISIS command position in Mayadin city in eastern Syria and killed 80 terrorists.

The Observatory said Russian air strikes on Thursday night killed 14 people, including three children, fleeing across the Euphrates on rafts near Mayadeen, AFP reported. The military offered no evidence on the purported condition of Abu Mohammed al-Golani.

According to military sources, the Syrian Army's elite Tiger Forces have battled their way into the heart of the Islamic State capital of Al-Mayadeen in southwest Deir ez-Zor Governorate.

The report also suggested that Syrian government troops, backed by Russian warplanes, are now near the al-Mayadeen Market and Grain Silos.

Mayadeen is one of the Daesh group's last bastions in Syria.

The province of Deir Az Zor was largely reclaimed by the pro-Bashar-al-Assad forces in August.

The Observatory said al-Qaida fighters captured several areas in the village on Friday. Moscow has said its Syrian allies were attacked by militants coming from areas near a deconfliction zone overseen by the U.S.

Syrian troops have broken a almost three-year siege on parts of Deir el-Zour last month and are fighting to liberate from IS remaining parts of the city.

According to the ministry, the Mi-28's crew were not hurt. However, no information has been received about any USA operations against the Islamic State during the six months of its existence. The US military base in al-Tanf protected by a "human shield" consisting of Syrian refugees has turned into a "black hole" on the Syrian-Jordanian state border from where mobile groups of the Islamic State (IS, terror group, outlawed in Russia) carry out sabotage and terror attacks, Russian Defense Ministry Spokesman Major-General Igor Konashenkov said on Friday.

The Russian accusations likely reflect rising tensions as US -backed Syrian forces and the Russian-backed Syrian army — both of which are battling IS — race for control of oil and gas-rich areas of eastern Syria.

Mayadeen, which the militants have controlled since 2014, sits on the western bank of the Euphrates River, between provincial capital Deir Ezzor, where the militants still hold several districts, and the border with Iraq.
