Controversy: Dove Soap Apologizes For 'Racist' Ad, Twitter Explodes

Controversy: Dove Soap Apologizes For 'Racist' Ad, Twitter Explodes

Dove later apologised for the ad claiming it had "missed the mark".

A Facebook ad by Dove that aimed to represent "women of color thoughtfully" quickly disappeared this weekend after it instead incurred intense social media backlash.

It shows the black woman peeling off her t-shirt and revealing a white woman underneath her skin.

In the now deleted picture, the four-panel shot shows a black woman in a chocolate brown shirt taking it off and revealing herself to be a white woman in a off-white shirt.

Naomi Blake, a beauty blogger, was one of the people who posted the image.

On Saturday, Dove, which is owned by Dutch-British consumer goods company Unilever, released a statement via its official Twitter account, apologizing for the advertisement.

Dove posted something similar on it's Twitter account, apologizing for the "offense" it caused, "An image we recently posted on Facebook missed the mark in representing women of color thoughtfully". In May, the brand promoted custom bottles that were meant to celebrate the diversity of body shapes, but became the butt of jokes on Twitter.

A few users brought up instances when the brand had other questionable marketing ploys that seemed to paint blackness as undesired. "We deeply regret the offense it caused".

People filled social media with criticism of the company. "We are committed to representing beauty of all ages, ethnicities, shapes and sizes". What were you going for, exactly?

One wrote: "What is Dove even trying to convey besides blatant racism?" "Your creative director should be fired", Angela Reinders wrote on Facebook.

Dove has since removed the ad and tweeted an apology. In 2011, a controversial ad showed three women standing in front of a wall designated in "before" and "after". "We do not condone any activity or imagery that intentionally insults any audience", the statement read.
