France take step closer to World Cup berth

France take step closer to World Cup berth

FC Copenhagen striker Pieros Sotiriou put Cyprus ahead early on as they looked for a win to maintain hopes of a play-off place, but two goals in three first-half minutes from Kostas Mitroglou and Alexandros Tziolis sent Greece two points clear of Bosnia. The game was however turned on its head for a second time after the break, with goals from Michy Batshuayi and Jan Vertonghen putting Belgium 3-2 up.

Belgium are already secured of automatic qualification from Group H, having won seven of their eight matches.

After beating Hungary secured nine wins from nine, you'd forgive Switzerland for thinking they deserved to have wrapped up top-spot in the group.

The other game in the group sees Gibraltar, who are without a point, host Estonia.

France return to the top of their 2018 World Cup qualification group courtesy of a 1-0 win over Bulgaria on Saturday night.

The pressure was on after Sweden had earlier swept past Luxembourg 8-0 to boost their hopes of making it to Russian Federation, which in turn all but eliminated Holland, who later won 3-1 in Belarus.

Earlier on Saturday, Sweden thrashed Luxembourg in Solna, which temporarily put them ahead of France at the top of the group. It was a nervy performance from the French, who endured long spells of pressure from the Bulgarians and saw N'Golo Kante pick up a hamstring injury after just half an hour, although victory at home to Belarus on Monday will secure their place in Russian Federation. Both teams are still looking for a first and second place-finish out of Group A of the competition and should provide an entertaining match.

In Group H, Switzerland and Portugal set up a victor takes all meeting in Lisbon on Tuesday after both emerged victorious from their penultimate matches.

Portugal claimed an unconvincing 2-0 win over minnows Andorra at Estadi Nacional.

Davy Pröpper opened the scoring for the Netherlands in the 24th minute.

"Thank God that he scored", said Portugal coach Fernando Santos.

Trailing the Scandinavians by three points, only a massive victory over Sweden in Amsterdam next week will save the three-time World Cup runners-up.
