Gas explosion rocks Ghana's capital Accra, causing fatalities -government

Anaglatey said the Ghana fire service was now at a stage where it needs to upgrade its methods.

People were seen running to the safer place after the explosion happened.

In an official statement by the Deputy Information Minister, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, the ministry confirmed that the blast radius was huge.

The initial blast occurred at the state-owned GOIL liquefied natural gas station and then caused other explosions at a Total gas station across the street, causing an inferno that forced residents to flee. "And the ambulance services assisted us to move all the injured persons to a number of medical facilities round".

He said "it is early days yet" to give figures on the number injured or dead, adding there were casualties.

The explosion has kicked off a debate about the location of gas stations in residential areas.

Homes have been evacuated around the city.

More than 200 police personnel were also deployed to help to cordon off the area of the explosion, making it hard to access. "There are some vehicles that were also burned as a result of the explosions".

In May, at least six people were killed in a tanker explosion at a factory in Takoradi, in Ghana's Western Region and back in June 2015, around 150 were killed after an explosion at a gas station in Accra.

Infrastructure in Accra, a city of roughly 7 million people, has failed to keep pace with population growth after years of rapid economic expansion.
