Namaste, Ni Hao: Nirmala Sitharaman Meets Chinese Troops At Sikkim Border

In a video shared by the official Twitter handle of the Defense Ministry of India, Nirmala Sitharaman was seen teaching Chinese soldiers how to say namaste.

Visiting the India-China border, Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Sunday interacted with some Chinese soldiers at Nathu-la and taught them the meaning of Indian greeting "namaste" as the soldier introduces his colleagues.

Notably, recent media reports have suggested that Chinese soldiers remain in the vicinity of the Doklam standoff site, in increased numbers.

The light-hearted exchange saw Sitharaman greeting them "Namastey", as the Chinese troops responded with the greeting, "Ni Hao".

"The defence minister is scheduled to visit to border states of Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh, where she will take stock on the prevailing security situation, especially after the Dokalam face-off".

"Namaste! You know what "namaste" is?" she asks a Chinese soldier who is acting as a translator. Sitharaman then pressed her hands together and greeted the soldiers with a smile.

Sitharaman however couldn't do aerial survey of Doklam owing to rough weather.

Sitharam, who was in Sikkim for a day, travelled to Nathu La by road and interacted with army and Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) officials.

The Defence Minister's visit to Nathu La came amid reports of presence of PLA troops in large numbers close to Doklam, where both Indian and Chinese soldiers were till recently engaged in a faceoff.

The officer guesses: "Nice to meet you".

She was accompanied by Vice Chief of the Army Staff Lt Gen Sarath Chand and GOC-in-Chief Eastern Command Lt Gen Abhay Krishna.

She reiterated the government's resolve to give further impetus to development in the border areas.
