Rupp and Dibaba take Chicago Marathon honours

Rupp surged ahead for good with three miles remaining to win in 2hrs 9mins 20secs with Kenyan runner-up Abel Kirui, the defending champion, 28 seconds back and Bernard Kipyego, also of Kenya, third in 2:10:23.

The Chicago Marathon is a long-standing tradition in the IL city where runners across the United States and the world gather to run through 29 neighborhoods and reach the finish line in Grant Park. Rupp pulled away in the race during the 23rd mile.

Rupp said: "It's just incredible".

Ethiopia's Tirunesh Dibaba won the women's race in 2:18:31.

Before the race, Dibaba told reporters that her plan was to break Paula Radcliffe's 2:17:18 course record from 2002. "This was very special for me, this was my third marathon and I am pleased because I have learnt a lot", she said after the race. Sunday marked his fourth career marathon.

Rupp, born four years after Meyer's victory, won a 10,000 metres silver medal behind his British training partner Sir Mo Farah at the London 2012 Olympics.

Rupp, 31, was the first American man to win the Chicago Marathon since Morocco-born Khalid Khannouchi in 2002. I really wanted to wait. Her sub-2:21 clocking is a course record for Americans. "When I went I knew I had to put the hammer down, be decisive and go for the finish".

Kosgei hung on for second place in 2:20:22 as United States' superb day continued with third place for Jordan Hasay in 2:20.57.
