Thanks to Liverpool's Mohamed Salah, Egypt Qualifies for World Cup

For the first time since 1990, the Egyptians are headed to the World Cup.

Nigeria became the first African qualifiers Saturday with a 1-0 Group B win over Zambia in Uyo thanks to a goal from another English Premier League player, Alex Iwobi of Arsenal.

They remain on top of the group with 12 points, gaining an unassailable four-point lead over Uganda.

The Liverpool star had broken the deadlock just after the hour on a tense night in Alexandria as he latched on to Mohamed El Nenny's pass before poking home from close range.

Egypt's President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi congratulated the Egyptian people after the match as tireless fans draped in flags turned the streets into an impromptu parade of red, white and black.

It was Salah too who put the Pharaohs ahead during the second half in Alexandria before Bouka Moutou's late equaliser. In that time, Egypt have won the Africa Cup of Nations on four occasions, including three titles in a row between 2006 and 2010.

Egypt's coach Hector Cuper has revealed he is ready to face Congo in a major decider despite increasing pressure from nationals for him to prove his worth.

Egypt got a reprieve in added time when substitute Mahmoud Hassan was brought and Salah restored the lead from the spot, sending the keeper the wrong way to clinch a place in Russian Federation next year.
