California Wildfires Prompt Mass Evacuations In Napa Valley

California Wildfires Prompt Mass Evacuations In Napa Valley

Meanwhile, the fire on Tubbs Lane near Calistoga had burned several buildings and sent several people to the hospital to be treated for burns.

Officials said it wouldn't be until daylight hours that fire agencies could begin to assess the amount of burned acreage and property loss.

Evacuations were also ordered on Partrick Road west of Napa, Soda Canyon Road, and Monticello Road up to the Circle Oaks subdivision, according to Molly Rattigan, deputy county executive officer.

"Everybody in Sonoma County is spread out battling these flames, however they don't have enough assets to deal with something like this", Windsor Fire Chief Jack Piccinni told the Associated Press before Monday.

Authorities were evacuating Sutter Santa Rosa Regional Hospital at 1:30 a.m.

Governor Jerry Brown declared a state of emergency for Napa, Sonoma and Yuba counties as the blazes engulfed the region in thick, billowing smoke that drifted into San Francisco and Oakland.

In recent memory, there hasn't been anything like the wildfires now burning in these relatively densely populated areas of the North Bay, and several cities and towns are likely to be assessing damages for weeks to come, and rebuilding for years to come, including Santa Rosa and Glen Ellen.

"Fire has burned all the way through the Silverado Country Club area", Biermann said in a reference to the Silverado Resort and Spa.

Torres home was on Wild Horse Valley Road and the Atlas Peak fire was roaring toward his neighborhood.

Numerous people had been hurt and some were missing, although no estimates were immediately available, said California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection Director Ken Pimlott.

Napa Mayor Jill Techel says authorities had to evacuate Montecito Boulevard and Monte Vista Avenue in the city.

Though he was rushing to escape the flames, Larsen also looked out for his neighbor who lived up the street.

"I mean blazing, falling down on fire", he said. The paper said there were reports of at least three structures burning on Atlas Peak. A full list of evacuation centers and road closures is here. The Sonoma County Sheriff's Office said hotels were evacuated and shelters were set up.

A large plume of smoke from the fire drifted as far south as San Francisco and the East Bay where residents were reporting the strong smell of smoke in the air.

At least one person lost their life as the Redwood Complex Fire snatched up 4,500 acres in flames.
