Novel gene test might 'narrow down breast cancer risk'

Novel gene test might 'narrow down breast cancer risk'

In one case, a 50-year-old woman surnamed Wu (吳) was embarrassed about the idea of having a breast cancer screening, but when she in March came across a station the local health bureau set up next to a market, she was convinced to have a mammogram, because the technician was also a woman, an HPA official said.

"We know that numerous women who are receiving (double) mastectomy do not have advanced tumors that require mastectomy even on the affected side", said lead study author Dr. Reshma Jagsi of the University of MI in Ann Arbor.

Amber Elliot the St. Francois County Health Center Assistant Director said, the data of institute on the rate of breast cancer in St. Francois County shows higher average than the state. "It means a lot to me and I know the girls who work here, it means a lot to them too".

But the new test can further narrow down a woman's risk level, allowing her to make a more informed choice about whether to have preventative surgery.

In this study, a team of researchers from Cleveland Clinic in Ohio, USA, took the first step to understand the bacterial composition in breast cancer by uncovering different microbial differences in healthy breast tissue and cancer. "Breast Cancer in the UK", which highlights how much more needs to be done to save the lives of people with breast cancer.

Breast cancer death rates declined nearly 40 percent between 1989 and 2015, averting 322,600 deaths, according to the American Cancer Society.

Among the surveyed women, 62 percent underwent lumpectomy to remove their tumors, 16 percent had unilateral mastectomy (8 percent with reconstruction), and 23 percent had bilateral mastectomy (19 percent with reconstruction).

Despite the staggering statistics, there's something else nearly more incredible.

Kennelly said the American Cancer Society recommends you start screening mammograms at age 40.

"I have women come in and I have to give them awful information", Stewart said.

Numerous women who had originally been classified by doctors as being in the high-risk category were subsequently reclassified to a lower risk category - where preventative breast-removal surgery is not recommended. The report, the latest to document a long-term reduction in breast-cancer mortality, attributed the declines to both improvements in treatments and to early detection by mammography.
