Russian Federation purchased Google ads to meddle in U.S. election

Facebook's blog post outlined what the company shared with Congress as part of its investigation into Russian interference in us elections.

While Facebook and Twitter have already indicated that they have discovered content funded by Russian interests, Google remains very discreet on the subject, even if the group was also invited by Congress to testify in a public hearing on the 1st of November.

According to The Post, the Google ads tried to "spread disinformation" and were a multipronged approach.

Google did not immediately respond to Business Insider's request for comment. But last week, the company was reported to be looking into the matter.

Google's involvement in Russia's election interference comes as more information continues to come to light about the country's infiltration of several social media sites that were crucial sources of information for Americans ahead of the election.

The Russian-bought ads unearthed by Google are seemingly not from the same Kremlin-affiliated entity that was found to have purchased ads on Facebook.

Twitter, meanwhile, also "proactively" shared with Congress a "round-up of ads" that Russia's state-run TV network Russia Today (RT) targeted at US users in 2016. The use of Twitter's data was not done with Twitter's permission.

The report could bring Google the same scrutiny that Facebook and Twitter are now facing from congressional panels investigating Russia's attempts to influence the 2016 race.

Facebook has announced changes to the way adverts are signed off, including "additional human review and approval" for some targeted ads. Facebook has widened its investigation to more accounts to many that have less clear ties to Russian Federation in an effort to be thorough.

In response to the television segment, Facebook tried to distance itself from the Trump campaign, telling 60 Minutes in a statement that although Facebook teams offer insight into how the company's products work, "campaigns make their own strategic decisions about how to use the Facebook platform". Rep. Adam Schiff, a Democrat of California, said, "The American people deserve to see the ways that the Russian intelligence services manipulated and took advantage of online platforms to stoke and amplify social and political tensions, which remains a tactic we see the Russian government rely on today".
