Supreme Court says no to firecrackers this Diwali

The Supreme Court on Monday said its order of November 2016 banning the sale of firecrackers in Delhi-National Capital Region (NCR) will continue till October 31.

The order said, "We should see at least in one Diwali the impact of a cracker-free festivity".

Three children had gone to the court asking that its order banning the sale of crackers in Delhi in November 2016 be restored. With the SC banning the sale of firecrackers in the Delhi-NCR till November 1, can Delhiites breathe a sigh of relief?

Every year, in the days following the festival of lights, there is a sharp rise in the number of people admitted to hospital suffering from asthma and respiratory problems - and many find it hard to breathe. Many traders those dealing in crackers must have purchased their stocks for this Diwali by now and the ban will put them in huge losses.

Meanwhile, as per sources, another leading NGO is planning to file a PIL to limit the consumption of 'Poori-Chhole' as well during Diwali as heavy consumption of these items also causes a lot of air pollution.

The SC allowed the sale of firecrackers to resume after November 1 this year.

Since bringing crackers in from surrounding areas and bursting them in NCR is still a possibility, the issue is sure to come up again before the court.

"The court has made it clear that all licences stand banned forthwith", Haripriya Padmanabhan, one of the petitioners, told NDTV news network after the order. Thereafter, the air quality will be examined and the impact of this ban will be scrutinized.

A 2015 Greenpeace report claims that round the year, the Indian metros, particularly Delhi, have very high quantities of pollutants in the air. She said, "So what that it's sale is banned, I will still celebrate it by the use of paper bombs".

Millions of highly polluting firecrackers are normally lit on Diwali, which falls on October 19 this year. The ban was imposed in 2016 past year and was lifted temporarily around 20 days back.
