Trump seeks border wall in exchange for 'Dreamers' deal

Trump seeks border wall in exchange for 'Dreamers' deal

Although, Trump's team didn't reveal how much legal immigration would be reduced under the plan, the impact would clearly be significant, according to Los Angeles Times.

At a Senate hearing, Republican Senator John Kennedy asked Homeland Security official Michael Dougherty about Dreamers.

While Democrats have signaled an openness to some deal on DACA and border security, numerous proposals alone would be deal-breakers.

Speaking about the list, Marc Short, Legislative Director at the White House, said that these are absolutely unavoidable if the administration is to take a reasonable stance about the economic and legal repercussions of giving any status to these immigrants.

"The principles the president has put out show he understands what's broken in our immigration system and what's holding down wages for American workers", Cotton said in a statement.

Rep. Michelle Lujan Grisham, D-N.M., the chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, said the president's "draconian and anti-immigrant principles" threatened to jeopardize "the bi-partisan, bi-cameral progress that has been made to pass a legislative solution that will protect almost 800,000 Dreamers".

The move to establish a merit-based immigration system could benefit highly-skilled Indian immigrants, especially those from the IT sector.

The Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC), consisting of Congressional Democrats of Hispanic origin, decried the newly-unveiled immigration principles as "draconian and anti-immigrant". Immediately threatening to vote against spending legislation "doesn't open the door for moderate Republicans" who support immigration reform bills, she said.

"It's an extension of the white supremacist agenda - what they want to do is criminalize and delegitimize Latinos", Gutiérrez said of the Trump administration's policies.

The demands were denounced by Democratic leaders in Congress who had hoped to forge a deal with President Trump to protect younger immigrants, known as "dreamers", who were brought to the United States illegally as children, Media reports.

Trump's immigration reform blueprint includes money for a border wall and more border patrol agents, and new enforcement measures to limit the flow of illegal immigrants into the U.S. The White House's demands touch on several points of heated disagreement, including Trump's controversial border wall, which is projected to cost upwards of $21 billion and require large seizures of public land.

President Donald Trump speaks during a swearing-in ceremony for Attorney General Jeff Sessions at the White House.

"I think what Nancy said when she left the meeting is different from what everybody else in the meeting had the impression of", McCarthy said, declining to answer further questions.

If enacted, the White House priorities could result in the deportation of Dreamers' parents. The aide spoke on condition of anonymity.

US President Donald Trump's announcement of his immigration policy priorities has thrown further doubt over the future of the US' 800,000 "Dreamers". "Now that they've rescinded it and it's going to end... they have all our information and that's always in the back of everyone's heads, no matter what's going to happen".
