A Black Man Beaten By White Nationalists In Charlottesville Is Facing Charges

Harris is the 20-year-old man who was seen being attacked by a group of white nationalists after crowds dispersed following the "Unite the Right" rally.

An arrest warrant has been issued for Deandre Harris, the 20-year-old African American man who was brutally attacked at the white supremacist rally that took place in Charlottesville, VA on August 12.

WVIR-TV in Charlottesville reports that an arrest warrant was issued Monday by a local magistrate after an unidentified person claimed they were injured by Harris.

The beating, which was captured on camera and quickly spiraled across the internet, occurred after a white supremacist tried to spear a counter-protester with a flag pole, the Washington Post reported in August.

He's being charged with one count of malicious wounding. "The victim went to the Magistrate's office, presented the facts of what occurred and attempted to obtain the warrant". Mr. Harris will turn himself in to the authorities in the coming days, his lawyer, S. Lee Merritt, said on Tuesday.

The investigation had just wrapped up, police said, when asked why they had not requested a warrant for the arrest of Harris.

"We find it highly offensive and upsetting, but what's more jarring is that he's been charged with the same crime as the men who attacked him", Merritt told the newspaper. The magistrate contacted police, Upman said, who verified facts and issued the warrant.

A GoFundMe page was set up after Harris' attack went viral and collected over $160,000. Both were charged with malicious wounding, a felony. He also said he had cuts across his eyebrow, a chipped tooth and abrasions on his knees and elbows. Harris incurred injuries that required him to have eight staples into his head. At a court hearing for Ramos last month, his attorney reportedly said it may have been Harris who "struck the first blow in that fracas". "There were some non-racist members who were going to a free speech rally".
