'Messi Must Win World Cup To Be Special'

'Messi Must Win World Cup To Be Special'

ARGENTINA travel to Ecuador for their final World Cup qualifier knowing they are in danger of missing out on the competition for only the second time in their history.

Ecuador have lost their last five qualifiers, with a place at Russian Federation already out of reach for them, but the side have not been beaten by Argentina in Quito since 2001.

Meanwhile, Brazil striker Gabriel Jesus insisted that they will play to beat Chile, which will boost Argentina's chances of qualification.

They are now sixth in the South American qualifying group - not enough to make it through - ahead of their final match away to Ecuador on Tuesday night.

As things stand, those two matches would take place in Wellington on November 8 with the return in Buenos Aires on November 15.

South American World Cup qualifying is going down to the wire and two of the world's finest players are set to play a major part.

Beleaguered coach Jorge Sampaoli - the third of the qualifying campaign - has called on his players to follow Messi's example. If they draw, they are out if both Argentina and Paraguay win.

If Argentina wins on the road at Ecuador, Messi will be in Russian Federation, leapfrogging the Colombia-Peru loser (or both if they tie) and possibly Chile if it doesn't beat Brazil.

In addition, a Brazil victory against Chile could aid Argentina in possibly grabbing an automatic qualification spot.

The 2014 World Cup finalists face their moment of truth after a series of uninspiring performances that has the sporting world scratching its head at how a squad bristling with so much attacking talent has found scoring so hard.

The good news - or bad news - depending on your perspective, is that Lionel Messi and Argentina are unlikely to be making the trip across the Pacific ocean.

"Messi is extraordinary but he is yet to win a World Cup", Infantino told the newspaper La Nacion.

"What made Diego so special to football for me is that he made us all fall in love with the game, of course he also won a World Cup".

Tuesday's matches will all start at the same time: Ecuador-Argentina, Brazil-Chile, Peru-Colombia, Paraguay-Venezuela, and Uruguay-Bolivia.

"When you put on the Brazil shirt, you always play to win". They need favours from everywhere.

Ecuador will be desperate to spoil the party on Tuesday night, and Argentina will need a huge slice of luck as they look at results from other games to aid their quest.
