North Korean hackers stole war plans developed by Seoul, Washington

North Korean hackers stole war plans developed by Seoul, Washington

Rhee Cheol-hee, a member of the ruling Democratic Party, said in an interview with local media published on Tuesday that the hackers had broken into South Korea's defense data center in September past year and snatched a trove of classified military documents.

SEOUL-Suspected North Korean hackers stole sensitive military secrets, including joint U.S.

As Kim has accelerated his nuclear weapons program and aimed increasingly bellicose threats at the allies, those plans have been updated to include "beheading operations" - strikes created to take out North Korea's leaders.

However, the extent of the breach is still unknown, as around 80 per cent of the contents of the 235 gigabytes of leaked data is yet to be identified, Mr Rhee said.

The Washington Post reports US President Donald Trump gave a directive for US Cyber Command to target hackers in North Korea's intelligence agency, the Reconnaissance General Bureau, early in his presidency.

In May, the South's defence ministry investigation said they believed the communist state was behind the hacking of the military's key online network.

The Defense Ministry admitted the leak in documents submitted to Minjoo Party lawmaker Rhee Cheol-hee under a freedom-of-information request.

The South Korean Defense Ministry has not commented on the allegations.

Seoul shut down the complex in February 2016 in retaliation for Pyongyang's missile and nuclear tests, claiming that the funds paid at Kaesong were channeled into the nuclear program-a claim the current South Korean government rejected in July, Reuters reported.

The White House dispatched an advance team of working-level officials in late September to check candidate sites for Trump's "special activity" here, according to the source.

The news agency cited Russian lawmaker Anton Morozov, who was in North Korea last week. Almost two million South Koreans visited the spot over a decade, according to South Korean government figures.

Amid the nuclear weapons progress that North Korea has been making, its leader Kim Jong Un and Trump have exchanged a heated rhetoric, with insults between the two turning personal and unsafe each time they speak about the other.

North Korea has denied playing any part, accusing South Korea of making up the claim.
