Philadelphia gambles with Joel Embiid's super max extension: National Basketball Association links

Philadelphia gambles with Joel Embiid's super max extension: National Basketball Association links

Embiid was the No. 3 pick in 2014 and missed his first two seasons due to foot surgeries.

Wojnarowski explained "the designated exception-termed "The Super Max"-allows Embiid to earn a higher percentage of the salary cap-and potentially millions of dollars more-if he meets criteria over the course of the deal".

Contracts in today's National Basketball Association are inflated, so paying Embiid $29 million per year when a role player like JJ Redick is making $23 million this year seems to be a great deal.

Philadelphia 76ers center Joel Embiid has agreed to a rookie-supermax contract extension of 5 years and $148 million.

Regardless, he's likely to face some sort of minutes restriction, and Embiid, himself, admitted that it's unlikely he plays in all 82 games this season, even if he stays healthy.

Embiid was named as a first-team All-Rookie last season with 20.2 points, 7.8 rebounds and 2.5 blocks per game.

The top two players in that draft, Andrew Wiggins and Jabari Parker, have played more games than Embiid. "They've got the best fans".

"I don't know what to say about that", Sixers point guard Ben Simmons of Embiid's contract. Let Embiid's contract situation linger and there's a potential future in which the Sixers not only have to watch him play for another team, but also pay considerable money to a far lesser player to replace him. The track record of injury-prone big men is littered with torn ligaments and broken dreams, and Embiid has already had several serious setbacks.

Embiid's career has been riddled with injuries dating to his college career at Kansas and all three seasons with the Sixers. With incentives, the deal could be worth as much as $178 million.

"In the time that he has been on the floor, we have seen him change completely the gym", Brown said.

For starters, this is a clear sign that the Sixers are fully committed to building the franchise around the 23-year-old.

"Joel Embiid is a transformative young talent that you rarely come across in our game", said Sixers president Bryan Colangelo in the press release announcing the deal. The Sixers had until October 16 to extend Embiid, and got it done a week prior to that.

Embiid, a native of Cameroon, appreciates that the 76ers were always supportive as he dealt with the injury troubles before finally making it on the court last season.
