Amazon Extends Monthly Prime Option to Cash-Strapped Students

Amazon Extends Monthly Prime Option to Cash-Strapped Students

Amazon has announced a new service that will open up its gargantuan ecommerce platform to millions more teenagers.

"As a parent of a teen, I know how they crave independence, but at the same time that has to be balanced with the convenience and trust that parents need", Amazon Households Vice President Michael Carr said in a statement.

With the full slate of benefits still included, students enrolled in a four- or two-year college will still have access to services like Prime Video, Prime Music, Prime Photos, Free One-Day shipping (where available), and more. However, teens won't be completely free to do as they please, since parents will be alerted about purchases and will have to approve transactions. By default, parents approve every order.

Setting up a teen account on Amazon requires input from the parent. Parents can set customized spending limits and approval requirements, and teens can send personalized notes like, "this is the book I need for class", Amazon said. The kid then receives an invite and they choose their own username and password. Once the order is placed, parents can see an itemized invoice and are able to cancel and return items, according to Amazon.com's normal terms.

Looking at the bigger picture, the For Teens feature is another move by Amazon to bring younger, up-and-coming consumers into its ecosystem. Amazon's dedicated page explains more about the function and how to get started.

The parent and child each get their own Amazon account, however, the parent has the control over which payment methods and shipping addresses can be used by the child.
