Donald Trump tweet suggests that FCC should take NBC off the air

NBC early Wednesday reported Trump queried USA military officials over the possibility of increasing the nation's nuclear weapons stockpile by tenfold during a summer meeting.

President Donald Trump today suggested that the Federal Communications Commission should challenge an NBC license because of "fake news".

Other officials at the meeting said they did not take Trump's wish for more weapons to be an instruction to build the numbers.

"We've heard a lot of anti-media attacks from this president but this is one of the worst", Stelter told anchor Brooke Baldwin. "I've seen tremendously dishonest press".

During the race for the White House and again in March, Trump suggested that it might be worth loosening libel laws in order to make it easier for people to challenge inaccurate stories, Bloomberg News reported.

"It seems to me he's reaching for excuses, reaching for ways to punish the media for stories he doesn't like", he stated.

News said the president called for the increase after he was shown a chart indicating the stockpile of U.S. nuclear weapons had slid from a high of 32,000 in the 1960s.

President Donald Trump said he wanted what amounted to a almost tenfold increase in the US nuclear arsenal during a gathering this past summer of the nation's highest-ranking national security leaders, according to three officials who were in the room.

America's overall military firepower, they said - which includes nuclear, conventional and next-generation weaponry - has left the US better positioned for national defense than at the end of the Cold War, when the nuclear piece of the puzzle was larger than today's. During a speech at the United Nations last month, Trump said the United States was prepared to "totally destroy" the North if necessary, and he derisively referred to dictator Kim Jong Un as the "rocket man".

First reported by NBC News on Wednesday, Trump's remarks apparently "surprised" military officials, who had to explain to the president "the legal and practical impediments to a nuclear buildup".

This marks the second time already this week Trump has threatened to go after a business. Earlier in the day, Trump on Twitter dismissed that report as "pure fiction" and raised the possibility that he would support stripping the broadcast licenses of news networks that report what he believes to be inaccurate information.
