Ireland Could Meet Familiar Foes In UEFA Nations League

Ireland Could Meet Familiar Foes In UEFA Nations League

England will be in League A; Wales, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland are in League B; while Scotland are in League C.

The top division is 12 teams strong and will be split into four groups of three, with the winners playing the Nations League finals in June 2019 to decide an overall victor.

After a traditional Euro 2020 qualification determines the first 20 participants, UEFA will use the Nations League tables to determine the last four teams to join them - one from each League.

That means missing out on the potential for games against Germany, Italy, Spain and England, who are among the dozen teams to qualify for League A.

The draw for the tournament will take place in Switzerland in January, with the games taking place next Autumn between September and November.

If, as is likely to be the case with Group A, there are less than four teams who have failed to make it to the Euros, the highest placed Group B team who has yet to qualify will take part in the Group A play-off.

There are four Leagues A, B, C & D, with teams placed according to their UEFA ranking.

The four group winners of League A will qualify for the UEFA Nations League Finals, to be held in June 2019, with two semi-finals, a third-place match and the final.

In each league, four group winners are promoted (or play in the Finals, see below) and four teams are relegated for the next competition to be played in 2020.

Northern Ireland are also in League B, alongside a number of Ireland's recent opponents, Austria, Sweden and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

League C contains Hungary, Romania, Scotland, Slovenia, Greece, Serbia, Albania, Norway, Montenegro, Israel, Bulgaria, Finland, Cyprus, Estonia and Lithuania.

League A will consist of the 12 top-ranked teams. The four group-winning teams in the division groups will progress to a final round to determine a champion.

League C will be made up of three groups of four teams and one group of three.

League D: Azerbaijan, FYR Macedonia, Belarus, Georgia, Armenia, Latvia, Faroe Islands, Luxembourg, Kazakhstan, Moldova, Liechtenstein, Malta, Andorra, Kosovo, San Marino and Gibraltar. The four group winners will be promoted to League C for the 2020 edition.

UEFA's website has a full breakdown of how the Nations League will work.
