Trump to name new Homeland Security secretary

President Donald Trump reportedly plans to nominate Kirstjen Nielsen, a longtime aide to chief of staff John Kelly, to head the Department of Homeland Security.

The White House said Nielsen has "extensive professional experience in the areas of homeland security policy and strategy, cybersecurity, critical infrastructure and emergency management". Prior to serving the Trump administration, she spent time on the White Hose National Security Council under President George W. Bush and as a senior fellow and member of the Resilience Task Force for George Washington University's Center for Cyber & Homeland Security think tank.

Nielsen, the deputy White House chief of staff, was a top aide to Kelly when he led the department and moved with him to the White House when he became chief of staff.

The official announcement of her nomination could come as early as later on Wednesday, the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Nielsen's departure from the White House would mark the latest upheaval in Trump's White House team.

White House Chief of Staff John Kelly and Deputy Chief of Staff Kirstjen Nielsen speak together as they walk across the South Lawn of the White House in August.

"She would be the first person to run the department who has actually worked there", one person close to the Trump administration told Politico.

Duke was criticized in September when she described Hurricane Maria relief efforts in Puerto Rico - where a large majority of the population still lacks electricity - as a "good news story". She was responsible for carrying out some of Kelly's orders on who gets access to the president. The department also is responsible for US border security.
