Iran FM briefs parliament on Trump's threat to nuclear deal

In a Wednesday interview with PBS channel, Federica Mogherini highlighted Iran's full compliance with the 2015 deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), and said, "We have the worldwide community strongly behind the full implementation of the deal".

Since taking office, the Trump administration has also signed multiple waivers for nuclear sanctions against Iran. Those in favor of keeping the deal in place argue it's working and will prevent Iran from making nuclear weapons for 15 years. Engel, the top Democrat on the Foreign Affairs Committee, said unwinding the agreement would send a unsafe signal to allies and adversaries alike.

Iran has already threatened the USA with dire consequences if it imposes sanctions against the country. North Korea's leaders, meanwhile, would have little incentive to negotiate a nuclear disarmament if they see the Iran deal collapse, he said.

"Let's work with allies to make certain that worldwide inspectors have better access to possible nuclear sites, and we should address the fundamental sunset shortcoming, as our allies have recognized", he said.

Notably, the committee's top Republican, Rep. Ed Royce, said the US should adhere to the deal.

Trump has certified the deal twice, once in April and once in July, although he has said he did not want to do it.

Serious concern has been growing on the possible U.S. administration's withdrawal from Iran nuclear deal. Second, it appears that moderate Senate Republicans will side with Democrats to block passage of any sanctions that could endanger the Iran deal. But he's changed his thinking.

"The deal not only will hold, but the deal does not belong to one country or another". Under the deal, which started being implemented in January 2016, Iran undertakes to limit its nuclear activities and allow transparent global control of its nuclear program.

If Trump decertifies the agreement, Congress will have 60 days in which it can reimpose economic sanctions on Iran.

Even more than the actual deal, Mr Trump detests the certification requirement, which forces him to sign off every three months on an accord he has called the worst deal ever negotiated by the United States, according to the officials.

"If we pass the message that with every change of administration in Washington or elsewhere deals are thrown away and renegotiated, no one would negotiate with any administration ever and any deal would be exposed to be renegotiated every term. That ship has sailed", according to the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Republican legislators recently began drawing up new versions of the law that remove the 90-day timetable and replace it with "semi-annual" certifications, according to the officials. On Thursday, intelligence officials scheduled a classified briefing for members of the House Foreign Affairs Committee. But many of his top national security aides don't want to dismantle the agreement, and America's European allies have lobbied the Trump administration and Congress to preserve the accord.

Top officials from Trump's national security team, including Defense Secretary James Mattis, have also confirmed that Iran has been technically compliant.

Many disagree Iran is in compliance with the JCPOA, including Senators Tom Cotton, R-Ark., Ted Cruz, R-Texas, David Perdue, R-Ga., and Marco Rubio, R-Fla., who spelled out major instances of Iranian noncompliance and cheating in a July 11, 2017 letter to Secretary of State Tillerson.

Every Republican in Congress opposed the worldwide accord reached under Democratic former President Barack Obama two years ago.
