USA flies strategic bombers over Korean peninsula

USA flies strategic bombers over Korean peninsula

According to one South Korean lawmaker, the country's hackers stole military plans developed by the USA and South Korea previous year. In August, Pyongyang threatened to fire intermediate-range missiles towards the vicinity of Guam, a US Pacific territory that is frequently subjected to sabre-rattling from the North.

The ministry said that there are no specific signs that confirm North Korea's reopening of the factory zone, though some bus movements and illuminated street lamps have been spotted.

Tensions over North Korea's weapons programme have soared in recent months with Pyongyang launching a flurry of missiles and conducting its sixth and most powerful nuclear test in defiance of multiple sets of United Nations sanctions.

Two supersonic United States bombers have flown over the Korean peninsula in a "show of force" despite Kim Jong-Un's threats to shoot them down.

"If the North Koreans in fact accessed the US/South Korean defense plans, this is a treasure trove of information and presents a real danger", said CNN military analyst and retired Lt. Col. Rick Francona. Defense officials refused to comment Wednesday.

Such operations have been happening with increasing frequency over the past several months, as have North Korean missile and nuclear tests.

South Korea said Tuesday it was maintaining full military readiness following intense speculation of a possible ballistic missile test by the North as it marks a key anniversary.

Late last month, the Air Force sent two B-1Bs over worldwide waters close to the North's east coast. A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson expressed hope that the relevant countries "will not engage in words or deeds that provoke one another or raise tensions", while a Kremlin spokesperson stressed that [Moscow] has "demanded that the countries involved [in the North Korean nuclear issue] exercise restraint and avoid measures that exacerbate the situation".

They staged a simulated air-to-ground missile firing drill with two F-15K fighters over the East Sea and flew across the peninsula, Yonhap news agency reported.

US Air Force Major Patrick Applegate said: "Flying and training at night with our allies in a safe, effective manner is an important capability shared between the US, Japan and the Republic of Korea and hones the tactical prowess of each nations" aviators'.

The drills were conducted not long after Lee broke the news about the alleged cyberattacks to reporters.

North Korea's been tied to data breaches before, including the infamous 2014 hack of Sony Pictures Entertainment in retaliation for its release of "The Interview", a comedy about an assassination plot against North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

Trump defended his tough approach on Wednesday as he conceded differences on North Korea with his own top diplomat, Rex Tillerson, who advocates keeping open the possibility of negotiations with Kim's authoritarian government.

Pyongyang has denied responsibility for the cyberattacks in its state media, criticising Seoul for "fabricating" claims about online attacks.

It would mark the first such talks since the U.S.

South Korean and U.S. government officials have been raising their guard against more North Korean provocations with the approach of the 72nd anniversary of the founding of North Korea's ruling party, which fell on Tuesday.

Lee said that 235 gigabytes of military documents were taken, but the military has yet to identify 80 percent of the documents that were compromised.

U.S. defense officials have told CNN that the aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan will conduct scheduled exercises with the South Korean navy off the peninsula at the end of this month.

" "Continuous Bomber Presence" missions ensure the US, along with key allies, have a credible capability to respond to a variety of levels and types of threats throughout the Indo-Asia-Pacific region", the Air Force statement said.
