Australian skydivers dead after mid-air collision

Australian skydivers dead after mid-air collision

The body of a skydiver has been found in a residential yard in far north Queensland, with two more bodies found nearby after a mid-air collision caused their parachutes to fail.

Mission Beach, located between Cairns and Townsville, is a regular skydiving spot for tourists, with the fatalities the worst in the industry's history for the region.

Kerri Pike, 50, was named as one of the victims who fell to their deaths after they collided with another instructor on Mission Beach, near Cairns.

The dead included two men in their thirties and a woman in her fifties, officials said.

A mother-of-eight who died alongside two experienced male instructors in a horrific skydiving accident was gifted the tandem-jump as a birthday present.

At this stage, it is believed that two men and one woman were killed, with at least one of these people an instructor.

"Every person in Mission Beach we have spoken to about #skydive tragedy is absolutely heartbroken Big industry, well supported by locals", reporter Daniel Bateman reported on Twitter.

'I was just watching him in free fall until he went behind the trees, and that was the last I saw'.

'I don't understand how three people could have died, unless someone was trying to catch them.

Brad Turner from the Australian Parachuting Federation said an investigator from the organisation was already in Mission beach assisting with investigations.
