Michigan Mom Spends Week in Jail for Not Immunizing Son

Michigan Mom Spends Week in Jail for Not Immunizing Son

This is about choice.

Oakland County Judge Karen McDonald ruled Wednesday that Rebecca Bredow will no longer have primary custody of the boy but will have joint custody with her ex-husband, James Horne.

The judge also said Bredow has a history of making child-rearing decisions without consent from her ex-husband and awarded temporary primary custody to Horne, while ordering him to have the boy properly vaccinated.

Now, she's breaking her silence about her time behind bars, the court system, and the support she's received from near and far and most importantly, her son. She was released from the Oakland County jail early Monday.

Parents in MI are legally allowed to skip or delay their children's vaccinations due to personal beliefs, according to the BBC. Parents and guardians with children enrolled in public and private schools in MI must attend an educational session to learn about the diseases that vaccines prevent before they are allowed to receive a nonmedical waiver.

Less than one week on, the Detroit mother says it's been the "worst five days" of her life, compounded by the news her son had been immunised. When their son was two, she claims the couple agreed to suspend all vaccinations. "I was trying to stand up for what I believed in, and it was worth it for me". "I just found out that he was vaccinated and I'm not going to get him back today", she told the Washington Post.

Federal health officials say vaccinations are safe and can protect children and teenagers from more than a dozen potentially harmful diseases.

Do you think all states should require vaccinations with only medical vaccinations?
