Paris plans to ban gas- and diesel-engined cars by 2030

Diesel-powered vehicles are actually set to be outlawed in Paris before their gas-powered equivalents.

"This is about planning for the long term with a strategy that will reduce greenhouse gases", said Christophe Najdovski, an official responsible for transport policy at the office of Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo. It's not the only developed country that has such plans, as the Dutch also plan to ban all fossil fuel cars by 2030, and China already stated it would ban petrol cars 'in the near future'.

Although it may seem incredibly hard for North Americans to imagine such a ban, many Parisians do not own a vehicle.

"This government goal affects the whole French territory, rural zones included", a Paris City Hall statement said. Some pollution spikes have been so bad they forced City Hall to bar half of all cars from traveling and to make public transportation free for several days. City officials are often forced to issue temporary bans on gas- and diesel-powered cars in response to particularly bad surges.

Paris has seen significant amounts of rising air pollution in the last few years. Drivers behind the wheel of cars older than 20 years will face fines unless registered as an approved classic.

France wants to ban internal combustion cars altogether by 2040. Electric cars will not be affected by the ban. Paris is already part of a group of cities that includes Madrid, Mexico City and Athens that plan to end the use of diesel-engined cars by 2025, collectively representing metropolises that are home to 42 million people. New owners can claim €6,000 ($7,100 USD) if purchasing an electric auto, or further increase their incentives to €10,000 ($11,800 USD) should they also arrange to have their old diesel vehicle scrapped alongside the purchase.
