Trump Nominates Cybersecurity Expert To Lead DHS

President Donald Trump has tapped Kirstjen Nielsen, John Kelly's principal Deputy Chief of Staff, as the Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security.

Rep. Bennie G. Thompson of MS, the senior Democrat on the House Committee on Homeland Security, said Wednesday in a statement he was pleased the president had made a decision on filling the post 'after letting the critical national security position remain vacant as the nation faced multiple major hurricanes and a domestic terrorism attack'.

Katko, R-Camillus, released a statement Thursday calling Kirstjen Nielsen "a fine choice" to serve as homeland security secretary. "Truly, there is nothing more valuable than to feel safe in your own country".

Trump additionally commended Kelly, who had just finished briefing the press, for his role at the DHS and now at the White House, saying "He is one of the finest people I have ever had the privilege to know, and we are deeply fortunate that he is now here at the White House as our chief of staff".

Putting Nielsen into the Homeland Security post will allow Trump and Kelly to keep a close eye on the department, but getting her out of the White House could permit some of Kelly's strictness to be relaxed.

Her nomination must be confirmed by the Senate.

Elaine Duke is running the DHS on an interim basis.

She also served as a corporate attorney and a congressional staff member, the White House statement said. Trump said Nielsen's appointment would make her the first former DHS employee to run the entire agency.

The sprawling department includes the agencies responsible for policing borders and immigration, a central focus for the Trump administration, including Customs and Border Protection, Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services.

"Kirstjen's a policy wonk at heart, especially when it comes to cyber", Frank Cilluffo, a former senior homeland security official under Bush who worked with Nielsen at George Washington University.

Nielsen will be the public face for immigration enforcement during the impending fight in Congress over legislation to toughen border security and provide permanent legal status to young people now covered by the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, which Trump is ending. Among the other candidates considered, according to people familiar with the process, was Representative Michael McCaul, Republican of Texas and the chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee.
