Liberia election: Weah retains lead as more results announced

Liberia election: Weah retains lead as more results announced

Liberia seeks a successor to Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, who led the country as it recovered from civil war and the Ebola outbreak that killed almost 5000 Liberians.

He was trailed by the Vice President Joseph Boakai who led in only the Lofa County while Charles Walker Brumskine also led in Grand Bassa and Rivercess.

"I can say for sure that Ambassador George Manneh Weah is going to be the next president of the Republic of Liberia", Weah's adviser Mulbah Morlu told Reuters.

In Liberia, a candidate needs more than 50% of the votes for outright victory in an election, with experts forecasting it is likely to go to a second round. The commission has until October 25 to announce the final results.

At a media briefing in the capital Monrovia late on Thursday, the National Electoral Commission released provisional results at less than 30% (28.75%) of the total number of votes counted. He now leads the first-round of voting with nearly 40 per cent of the vote, though if he does not achieve absolute majority, he will have to enter a run-off against the second place candidate.

"I would like to congratulate one of my former players, who became president of Liberia", Wenger said. So well done, Georgie.

Any irregularities would taint the results of an election expected to mark the first democratic transfer of power in over seven decades in a country haunted by a civil war that ended almost 15 years ago.

The other parties behind the candidates alleged that there was voting fraud and vowed to contest the results on Thursday.

Liberia, Africa's oldest modern republic, was founded by freed US slaves in 1847 but its last democratic power transfer dates back to 1943.

Sirleaf is leaving office after completing a two-term mandate of 12 years. He is, however, one of the favourites to replace President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf on this occasion.

"He stood for election in 2005, and then they said he lacked experience, but the fact he is now a senator plays a big role".
