Prescription drug take-back is October 28

Prescription drug take-back is October 28

Those with unneeded prescription drugs can turn them over Saturday during National Prescription Drug Take Back Day in downtown Bakersfield. Unused or expired pills and patches will be accepted - no questions asked.

Thermometers, IV bags, blood and infectious wastes, hydrogen peroxide, aerosol cans, inhalers, EpiPens and other sharps and needles will not be accepted.

"In addition to posing serious health and safety hazards, unused prescription drugs collecting in our homes can create unintended gateways to addiction, fueling the heroin and opioid abuse crisis", said the senators in a joint statement.

When prescription drugs that are no longer needed are left around the house, they can fall into hands that may abuse them, officials say.

Drug overdoses are now the leading cause of injury-related death in the United States, eclipsing deaths from motor vehicle crashes or firearms.

This program, which began in September of 2010, is sponsored by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration to combat the abuse or misuse of potentially risky medicines that have expired or are no longer needed for those they were prescribed to. Overall, in its 13 previous take-back events, the DEA and its partners have taken in more than 8.1 million pounds - more than 4,050 tons - of pills.

Among the Take Back locations will be the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire Station No. 111 on Rio Linda Boulevard, Sacramento County Sheriff's Office on 65th Street, and at Elk Grove, Citrus Heights, Rocklin and Roseville police departments.

Monmouth County residents can drop off their unwanted prescriptions at any time at its permanent collection site, located at the front entrance of the Sherriff's Office.

For more information regarding medicine collection in Somerset County, contact Sheriff's Officer Dave Daneker at 908-231-7140, ext.
