It's time to get your annual flu shot

It's time to get your annual flu shot

Flu can occur in any month, but primarily from October through May.

The flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses that infect the nose, throat and sometimes the lungs, the health unit says. They include a 66-year-old male, an 81-year-old female from New Castle County and a 73-year-old Kent County female. During long periods of cool temperature, influenza cases can increase drastically. "So we will be able to get some here for the next month or so, I think", said Beyer.

The Health Department is now investigating a flu outbreak at a healthcare facility where there are five other confirmed flu cases, including an 82-year-old man who had to be hospitalized. If you feel like you are going to faint (it happens), you may want to lay down on an exam table to get your vaccine.

Six Delawareans have been diagnosed with the flu this month.

You must be in the office to get your shot before 5:30 this evening. People who have severe, life threatening allergies to the ingredients in the flu vaccine (such as eggs or gelatin) also can't be vaccinated.

National uptake figures indicate that 54 per cent of people aged 65 and over, who hold a medical card or GP visit card, received the flu vaccine during the 2016-2017 flu season. Vaccinated people have less chance of missing family, school and work events due to influenza illness.

The CDC recommends a flu shot along with other everyday basic precautions like washing hands to reduce the spread of germs and staying away from people with the flu.

The illness can spread from person to person through breathing, coughing and sneezing. Droplets from a sneeze can travel up to six feet.

Beware of infections. Here's what to watch out for-the nurse should wash her hands or use alcohol-based hand rub and then put on sterile gloves.

Most people who are infected with influenza can develop high fevers, chills, body aches, fatigue, cough, difficulty breathing, loss of appetite, diarrhea and vomiting that usually lasts 10 days, according to Dr. Gale Burstein, commissioner of the Erie County Health Department.
