Popular baby foods and formulas test positive for arsenic, lead

Sixty-five percent of baby food brands tested positive for arsenic, and smaller percentages also had lead, cadmium, and BPA, according to a new study. The same study determined 80 percent of baby formula contains the deadly poison as well.

A study which looked at hundreds of baby food products found that 65% of the items tested positive for the unsafe chemical element arsenic, according to the Clean Label Project.

Those chemicals can pose potential risks for infants especially problems with their young immune and nervous systems.

As part of its Total Diet Study, the FDA carefully tests and monitors the levels of various potentially harmful chemical elements and industrial contaminants in a range of foodstuffs, including baby foods.

The World Health Organization labeled arsenic as one of 10 chemicals that are major public health concerns. The nonprofit's executive director added that rice-based baby foods like snack puffs had the highest levels of arsenic in them.

"It is important for consumers to understand that some contaminants, such as heavy metals like lead or arsenic, are in the environment and can not simply be removed from food", Peter Cassell, a FDA spokesperson, told USA Today.

The researchers also found that mainstream brands, which include Enfamil, Gerber, Plum Organics, and Sprout, were among the worst offenders that scored two out of five in the report card for toxic metals.

This isn't the first time lead has been found in baby foods.

"The baby industry needs to do a better job in protecting America's most vulnerable population", Bowen said. "There are a lot of troubling news stories about arsenic in baby rice cereal and lead in water, as well as pesticides, antibiotic resistance and additives in foods", Clean Label Project wrote on its site. Bowen said that she is expecting parents to become good counsellor in taking care of children's health and refine the baby's food business.
