Trump declares public health emergency in response to national opioid epidemic

But it is also fair to say that unless the next step includes allocating billions of dollars for comprehensive outreach and treatment programs for the millions of mostly poor people hit hardest by the opioid crisis, Trump will have failed to live up to his promises - and thousands of Americans will continue to die every month as a result. "Believe me. Very, very tough life", Trump said.

The opioid epidemic killed 64,000 Americans in 2016, prompting Trump to call it the "worst drug crisis in our nation's history".

The President urged Congress to add money to a public health emergency fund that hasn't replenished for years and again promised to build a wall along the Mexican border.

Some were disappointed he didn't use the Stafford Act mechanism to fight the problem because it would have made more money available.

Meanwhile, Trump's opioid commission, led by New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, is set to release its final recommendations on November 1. But it remains unclear what impact Trump's new order will have on the crisis. It is time to liberate our communities from this scourge of drug addiction, never been this way.

"A nationwide public health emergency will really reorient all of the federal government and executive branch's resources towards focusing on providing relief for this urgent need", an official said.

From left, White House senior adviser Jared Kushner, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and President Donald Trump attend a panel discussion on opioid and drug abuse in the Roosevelt Room of the White House, March 29, 2017.

U.S. Sen. Rob Portman, an Ohio Republican who attended Trump's speech, said he hopes the initiative will lead to "a better coordinated federal response to this crisis".

"Well, you know, I think there's more to come on that."

The Public Health Emergency Fund at HHS now stands at $57,000, according to an agency spokesperson, and officials said the president's declaration won't yet include a request for Congress to replenish the fund.

And this week, Food and Drug Administration head Scott Gottlieb said his agency plans to encourage wider use of medications such as methadone and buprenorphine to treat patients with opioid addiction, a step widely seen as critical to addressing the crisis.

In three years, her three sons were gone. "They are all commonly treated with a range of controlled substances which, until now, have not been able to be prescribed by telemedicine", ATA President Peter Yellowlees, MD, said.
