Japanese man stored dismembered bodies at home after two-month killing spree

Japanese man stored dismembered bodies at home after two-month killing spree

A Japanese man police say confessed to killing and dismembering nine bodies found in his apartment, was handed over to prosecutors for questioning on Wednesday as more details emerged.

He may also have briefly kept some of his victims alive before murdering them.

After killing the victims at his apartment in Zama, a southwestern suburb of Tokyo, he reportedly hacked off the flesh from the bodies before throwing it out with his rubbish and sprinkling cat litter over it. The heads were in coolers near the front door and a search of the apartment revealed the other victims. Forensic tests are being conducted on the restraints.

Although the police have so far charged Shiraishi only with "abandoning bodies", news reports on Tuesday described him as a serial killer who sought people who were thinking of killing themselves and who had expressed their dark thoughts on Twitter.

A police official, who spoke to The Associated Press on Tuesday said that a toolbox and saw found in Shiraishi's apartment may have been used to dismember the bodies.

Police made the gruesome discovery this week while searching for a 23-year-old woman who had disappeared one week prior.

An investigation was launched after the woman's older brother reported her missing to the Takao Police Station in western Tokyo on October 24, saying he had not been able to contact her since October 21.

According to local media reports, she had been seen on security camera footage walking with Shiraishi near the apartment.

The Mainichi report said that he had found his first victim on Twitter and had asked to meet up, but that she had come with her boyfriend.

Shiraishi remains under arrest on suspicion of attempting to dispose of the bodies, a charge usually brought by the Japanese authorities while they gather sufficient evidence to lodge a murder charge.

The case captured attention in a country known for public safety, topping news with reports that showed the building where the suspect lived in a small studio apartment. Shiraishi's neighbors noticed "foul smells" near his apartment lately. She had been missing since September 21.
