Japanese Firm Gives Six Extra Days Leave to Compensate for Cigarette Breaks

Japanese Firm Gives Six Extra Days Leave to Compensate for Cigarette Breaks

There are other ways to incentivize employees to quit smoking, according to The Midwest Business Group on Health.

The higher-ups at the marketing firm agreed, and offered nonsmoking employees a whopping six extra vacation days a year - enough to account for the accumulated smoke breaks.

Although the United States has had its own problems with people not taking enough time off from work, Americans aren't smoking as much as they used to.

A Japanese company will give its non-smoking employees an additional six days off to promote fairness and simultaneously acknowledge the amount of time smokers use to take smoke breaks.

But at Piala, which has its headquarters in a Tokyo high-rise, about 35 percent of employees smoke, and the cigarette breaks had become disruptive.

"I hope to encourage employees to quit smoking through incentives rather than penalties or coercion", he told a reporter.

Following the suggestion, the company's CEO Takao Asuka chose to give non-smoking employees extra time off to compensate, Matsushima added. It was only this past year that the percentage of Japanese adults who smoke fell below 20 percent.

Globally, smoking carries costs of more than $1 trillion per year, according to a study from the World Health Organization and the U.S. National Cancer Institute. Roughly 35% of Pilia employees smoke, the New York Times reports.

That may change as the government tries to crack down on public smoking ahead of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. But most restaurants and bars still allow smoking.

So far, however, the measure taken by Piala Inc. seems to be working. "So we decided it's better to give rewards (to non-smokers) than punish the smokers".

The organisation, which has approximately 120 employees, launched the benefit to staff in September, and to date it has been taken up by 31 employees.
