Why Philippines slipped in WEF's gender gap ranking

Why Philippines slipped in WEF's gender gap ranking

Given the continued widening of the economic gender gap, it says, "it will not now be closed for another 217 years".

Last year, the Global Gender report had mentioned that it would take almost 83 years to close the gap. One metric was life expectancy: Chinese women outlive men by less than two years on average, compared with a global average of five years.

A comparison of the scores of the top 10 ranking countries from 2016 to 2017 suggest the world is improving its gender equality issues faster than India. "To harness this opportunity for growth, all countries across Eastern Europe can do more to ensure that their policies are up to date and able to alleviate the current care burden on women and ensure equitable treatment across the region's labour markets", Ms Ratcheva continues. And the country dropped from first to 31st in an index of economic participation and opportunity for women.

Compared with 11 years ago, the position of Chinese women has improved as well.

Russian Federation has closed the gender divide between men and women in terms of health and life expectancy for the first time in over a decade, but women remain alienated from politics, according to a new report on global gender inequality.

New Zealand is among the top ten nations in the world when it comes to gender equality, according to a new global report.

Overall, some 68 percent of the global gender gap has been closed.

"Gender equality is both a moral and economic imperative".

Among the industries surveyed globally, large gaps were found in the availability of women talent for entry-level positions and the demand for hiring in industries, like manufacturing, and energy and mining, the talent pool of women graduates was found to be much larger than the demand for hires, it said.

In recent years, women have made significant progress towards equality in a number of areas such as education and health, with the Nordic countries leading the fray.

Switzerland has dropped ten places in an global gender gap index to position 21, lagging behind the Nordic countries in terms of progress.

Iceland is in the top position for the ninth year in a row, followed by Norway and Finland.

No country has closed the pay gap, WEF said, using data from institutions such as the International Labour Organization, United Nations Development Programme and World Health Organization.

Political empowerment has the widest gender gap with only Iceland having closed more than 70 percent of the gap.

Weighted by population, 95 countries rank below the political empowerment sub-index world average (0.227) this year.
