Australia refuses New Zealand offer on refugees

Australia refuses New Zealand offer on refugees

That decision comes as almost 600 refugees and asylum seekers, who are cut off from food, water, and medical supplies, remain barricaded inside a now-closed detention centre over fears for their safety.

"We should give consideration to what New Zealand is offering", former immigration minister Kevin Andrews told Sky News.

"The offer is very genuine and remains on the table", Ardern told reporters today.

Speaking to the ABC, Shorten said "Australia is not and must not be a resettlement option but it is [Prime Minister Malcolm] Turnbull's responsibility to work with other nations on resettlement options".

"We've always believed that we can try our best to find a balance to pursue the interest of our exporters but at the same time we want it to maintain the position of trying to pursue New Zealand's best interest".

Turnbull had said that Australia was pursuing a deal with the U.S. to take more than 1000 refugees from Australia before he considered other offers.

Do you think Turnbull should have taken the New Zealand offer?

Opposition leader Bill Shorten has urged Turnbull to take up the deal, saying that it would not put "people smugglers back in business".

Australia withdrew from the Manus Island centre on Tuesday, following a PNG court ruling that the centre was unconstitutional.

Australia's concern in the past has been that refugees will settle in New Zealand and then move to Australia but Ardern said there were ways to deal with that.

She said the circumstances had changed since the last time the offer was made - by English in February.

It comes after a government backbencher broke ranks to support sending refugees to New Zealand to help end the stand-off on Manus Island.

"Yes, the United States are going to accept some of these people but there is still a large number there."
"It is now an acute situation that Australia is dealing with".

Senator Di Natale said New Zealand had a more compassionate approach to refugees.

"We are talking about people who have been attacked and assaulted in these camps, where women who have been raped have been denied terminations".
