Amazon launches Fire TV Stick Basic Edition in over 100 countries

Amazon launches Fire TV Stick Basic Edition in over 100 countries

There's also support for 1080p HD video streaming with the High Efficiency Video Codec, as well as Dolby Audio for a higher-quality audio experience.

Fire TV Stick Basic Edition is available now (November 2017) for $49.99 in more than 100 countries around the world.

It's essentially the standard Fire TV Stick but without Alexa voice command support. Simply plug it in, connect to Wi-Fi, and start streaming in minutes.

Amazon on Tuesday announced a new version of its popular Fire TV stick that strips out some of the bells and whistles for global users. Inside, the streaming stick comes with a 1.3GHz processor with 1GB of RAM and 8GB of storage. It's made even more confusing by the fact that Amazon continues to sell last year's Fire TV Stick.

This streaming media player lets customers access TV shows, apps and games on their TV, launching in over 100 countries and territories worldwide, building on Amazon's launch of Prime Video a year ago. Users can set the default language to Spanish, French, Italian, Brazilian Portuguese, German or English.

After all, audio and video streaming is rapidly taking off around the world, not just in the U.S. and a couple of other key Western markets. Then you can stream Prime Video, Netflix, TV shows, movies, and more.

From what I could gather, the Basic Edition doesn't exist to replace 2016's Fire TV Stick, but as an option for the rest of the world.

One quick look at the list of specifications and it becomes clear that we've seen this Fire TV Stick before. Those versions are more powerful and, curiously, also less expensive. Other countries and territories can purchase the Fire TV Stick Basic Edition from Amazon.com, shipped free worldwide.

The Fire Stick available to Kiwis is a basic version, and it doesn't have voice support for Alexa or other voice-based search functionalities.
