Samsung denied Supreme Court appeal for slide-to-unlock patent case

The next step would have been to bring this case to the highest court of the land.

Following weeks of testimony and three days of deliberations, the eight-member jury reached a decision awarding Apple $119,625,000 on three infringed patents and Samsung $158,400 on one patent.

Apple is now owed $120 million from Samsung after the Supreme Court has denied the South Korean company's appeal in a case regarding its Californian counterpart's patents for the "Slide to Unlock" and "Quick Links" mechanisms. Adding up, Samsung also said, "The lower courts made it too easy for Apple to prove infringement of a patent covering quick- link technology for converting text- message data". After that, Samsung had appealed to the Supreme Court, where it finally met its end in the ruling made today. Apple Inc is expected to report a 1.3 percent increase in iPhone sales in the holiday quarter, its slowest ever and a far cry from the double-digit growth investors have come to expect. In its filing to the Supreme Court, Samsung said that the patent court judges failed to follow the proper process by not hearing oral arguments or considering other documents related to the case. And after three years of back and forth, the US Supreme Court has now finally laid the matter to rest - declaring Apple as victorious. That amount excluded another $382 million in damages for allegations that Samsung copied Apple's packaging materials.

The company had noted that one of Apple's patents at issue in the case had been invalidated by courts "and yet today's decision allows Apple to unjustly profit from this patent, stunts innovation and places competition in the courtroom rather than the marketplace".

Apple has not yet commented on the matter. This latest ruling is just one of the many cases that Apple and Samsung are fighting out.

The original case was based around Apple's iconic "Slide To Unlock" feature.
