Alford to sit 3 players involved in shoplifting incident

Alford to sit 3 players involved in shoplifting incident

The three UCLA basketball players who were caught shoplifting while on the team trip to China will more than likely have to remain in China for about a month, according to multiple sources.

While the Georgia Tech players were allowed to leave, the UCLA kid were reportedly seen getting into a police auto.

"On Tuesday morning in Hangzhou, China, three Georgia Tech men's basketball student-athletes were questioned by local authorities at their hotel", the school said.

A Hangzhou government spokesperson confirmed to AFP that three American citizens had been arrested on suspicion of shoplifting but referred further questions to police, who could not immediately be reached.

"We are aware of a situation involving UCLA student-athletes in Hangzhou, China", UCLA said in a statement released on Tuesday.

UCLA's statement, per ESPN, said the university was aware of the incident and cooperating with Chinese authorities.

The UCLA Bruins are in China to play Georgia Tech in their season opener this weekend.

Ball later issued a short statement, calling the incident "a very unfortunate situation that the Ball family and UCLA has to deal with at this particular time".

While Lonzo now plays for the 5-5 Lakers, younger brother LaMelo was taken out of Chino Hills High School so he can be made into 'the best basketball player ever, ' according to father LaVar.

According to ESPN, LaVar Ball was meant to speak to the media on Wednesday morning from his hotel suite in Shanghai but declined after he was advised by legal counsel not to speak "due to the legal nature of the matter".

"He'll be fine. He'll be fine", Ball said. He'll be fine. Everybody making it a big deal. "We will comment shortly". If convicted, the three could face anywhere from 3-10 years in a Chinese prison. "The players questioned were respectful at all times". During the questioning, it was determined that Georgia Tech student-athletes were not involved in the activities being investigated.
