Facebook Wants Nude Pics to Combat Revenge Porn

The eSafety agency may then tell the person to send the image to themselves through Facebook Messenger. The company is testing a program in Australia that would mark each picture as non-consensual explicit material. The social media company will then put the image through its processing, create a signature - hash - and then using it in future will prevent uploading of any similar images on the social network for that one particular user.

At least that is what Facebook and the Australian government is saying to do in a new test aimed at cutting off potential revenge porn before it happens.

According to the e-Safety Commissioner, one in five women between 18-45 and one in four Indigenous Australians are victims of revenge porn.

So how does allowing Facebook to see you naked prevent the rest of the world from seeing it?

Once the image is sent through Messenger, Facebook would "hash" it, meaning that it would use technology to create a digital fingerprint or link. The Telegraph reported that to provide the photos directly to Facebook, users should send them through the Messenger app.

"The service providers turn around and say "yes we removed the images", but what they don't do is remove the accounts", Szalkiewicz proclaimed.

In the Australian pilot, users must first complete an online form on the e-safety commissioner's website outlining their concerns.

Facebook's customer support team will then review a blurred version of the image to ensure it's explicit, then "hash" it before deletion.

It's unclear whether Facebook is planning on bringing the technology to WhatsApp once it's capable of running autonomously, but if it really wants to make revenge porn a thing of the past, it will most definitely need to.

Back in April this year, Facebook launched new tools so that users of their platform could flag nude images posted without their prior consent.

Revenge porn isn't uncommon in the United States.

Revenge porn is a growing issue, and Facebook is piloting a novel scheme to combat it. "We look forward to getting feedback and learning", a Facebook spokesman said.

"[Facebook] thought of many different ways about doing this and they came to the conclusion as one of the major technology companies in the world that this was the safest way for users to share the digital footprints", Ms Inman Grant said.
