New research: A drink a day increases cancer risk

New research: A drink a day increases cancer risk

The doctors' group is also calling for new public health initiatives to curb alcohol use, from taxes to restrictions on ads targeting minors, like the new ban on alcohol advertising on New York City's subways and buses slated to go into effect in January.

The organization is particularly concerned because 70 percent of Americans don't recognize alcoholic consumption as a cancer risk factor, based on the National Cancer Opinion Survey, which the ASCO conducted earlier in 2017.

In a Tuesday statement, the group cited evidence that light drinking can even slightly increase the risk of breast cancer and increase the risk of a common esophageal cancer.

"People typically don't associate drinking beer, wine, and hard liquor with increasing their risk of developing cancer in their lifetimes", said ASCO President Bruce Johnson. "It's a pretty linear dose-response".

You can also do certain things to decrease your cancer risk, like getting more exercise.

The CDC recommends that women have no more than one drink a day or eight drinks a week.

"We are seeing some very alarming trends in alcohol overconsumption, especially among women", Dr. Ali Mokdad, the author of a separate alcohol usage study, said in a 2015 news release.

"If you drink more, drinking less will definitely reduce your risk", she says.

Researchers found that light drinking was associated with a 13 per cent increase in head and neck cancer, and a four per cent increase in breast cancer.

"The story of alcohol has been quite consistent and has been peeled away like an onion over time, and we're continuing to learn more about the mechanisms involved", Dr. Gapstur said.

As we head into the holiday season, you may want to keep the following findings in mind before allowing yourself to indulge in an extra festive drink or two.

In a phone interview, Gapstur stressed that people living with cancer remain at risk for other cancers so it's important that they realize alcohol's role in cancer recurrence, too. The formation of acetaldehyde starts when alcohol comes in contact with bacteria in the mouth, which may explain the link between alcohol and cancers of the throat, voice box and esophagus, she suggested. Since there's evidence linking breast cancer to drinking, companies shouldn't be "exploiting the color pink" or using pink ribbons to show their support of breast cancer research, the authors said.
