Mueller Investigating Flynn's Role in Alleged Plot to Deliver Cleric to Turkey

Mueller Investigating Flynn's Role in Alleged Plot to Deliver Cleric to Turkey

He left the Trump White House after misleading Vice President Pence on his contacts with the Russian ambassador.

Ex-national security adviser Michael Flynn and his son discussed the alleged plot with Turkish representatives, NBC News and Wall Street Journal report.

The new allegation, that Flynn and his son engaged in a conspiracy to arrange the rendition of Fethullah Gülen to the Erdoğan government - which accuses the cleric of plotting an abortive coup in July 2016 - could if confirmed result in even more serious charges.

Gulen, who has been living in self-imposed exile since 1999, strongly denies the accusations of involvement.

FBI agents investigated at least four individuals about a meeting held in December 2016, during the presidential transition, at the 21 Club in New York City, where Flynn met representatives of the Turkish government.

Mr Mueller's team has also interviewed White House senior policy adviser Stephen Miller, the highest-level Trump aide known to have spoken with investigators, CNN reported on Thursday.

The questions were part of a criminal inquiry into Flynn's paid lobbying efforts for Turkey after he was sacked as head of the Defense Intelligence Agency and joined the Trump campaign as a senior advisor.

The Journal said the people who described the alleged proposal didn't attend the December meeting and didn't have direct knowledge of the details.

Flynn allegedly discussed the plot at a meeting in NY in December 2016, when he was a member of then U.S. President-elect Donald Trump's transition team.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who has long pressed the U.S. to extradite Gulen, considers the cleric a political enemy.

Lawyers for Flynn and his son declined to comment to the Journal.

The December meeting about Mr Gulen was also reported on Friday by NBC.

Participation in an effort to snatch Gulen in the US could expose Flynn to an assortment of federal charges.

Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn (ret.), national security adviser, designate speaks during a conference on the transition of the presidency from Barack Obama to Donald Trump at the U.S. Institute Of Peace on January 10, 2017 in Washington.

The investigation into Flynn is part of Mueller's probe into whether Trump campaign advisers colluded in Russian interference into the 2016 USA election.

Flynn's meeting in December followed one that he attended on September 19, 2016 with two top Turkish government officials, Turkish foreign affairs minister Mevlut Cavusoglu and energy minister Berat Albayrak. Flynn then retroactively registered as a foreign agent.

On November 8, Flynn published an op-ed piece in The Hill that called Gulen "a shady Islamic mullah" and a "radical Islamist".
